Answering my 30 research questions #1

 1. Is milk really good for our body? Milk DOES do a body good. This is according to Madelyn Fernstorm from the article in NBC News.  Milk is good for especially development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth.  However, milk is health plus only if you can digest readily. This is the large part of the confusion.  Milk is a nutrient powerhouse. Some people get digestive upset from milk, but much of people can digest milk just fine. This upset is almost always from the lactose (milk sugar), which needs the enzyme "lactose" to be digested.  People who lack that enzyme or don't have enough of it experience lactose intolerance. It's quite rare to have a true milk allergy, where milk's protein (casein) cannot be digested.  Cow's milk is a healthy choice, if it works for you. If you don't drink milk (or consume dairy products) make sure your alternatives provide plenty of protein, calcium, and vitamin D.  Milk has a taste that's familiar and loved from

Debut of my new NGO, "MIN"

Image
I created a new NGO relating to the research I did this semester. First I will show you the results I got from my survey about drinking milk.  I found these two results interesting. One is "Have you ever met anyone who can't drink milk due to their physical reasons?"  About 40% of them had never met people who can't drink milk due to their physical reasons. I was surprised by this because experts estimate that about 68% of the world's population is lactose intolerant . Lactose intolerance is generally most common in asian countries , and in Japan , most of the people are lactose intolerant.  The other one asked if you know what lactose intolerance is, and more than half of the people answered that they don't know what lactose intolerance is.  So, due to the results of my survey, I wanted people to understand about lactose intolerance more , and have the right knowledge about drinking milk . The name I came up for this NGO is " MIN ", which means

Survey Summary

I conducted a survey about "drinking milk" on monkey survey. Fortunately, 19 people answered this survey. I appreciate everyone who cooperated!  I will mention the results from now. First, most of the people who answered this survey were 18-24 years old .  For the second question, I asked "How often do you drink milk?" About 1/3 answered that they drink milk everyday . Some answered that they drink soy milk everyday. For the third question, "What kind of milk do you drink?", most people answered they drink whole milk . There were a few people who drink soy milk and low-fat milk. For the fourth question, "What time of day do you drink milk or other milk substances?", about half of the people answered that they drink milk in the morning .  For the fifth question, I asked "What is the occasion/reason for drinking milk or other milk substances?" Most people answered that they drink them when they feel like drinking it .  For the sixth qu

Using Word Clouds

Image
This word cloud was made from the article "Why We've Been Fighting About Milk for 10,000 Years." (from TIME) https://time.com/5244870/milk-history-mark-kurlansky/ You can see from this word cloud that besides the word "milk", the word "babies" and "cows" are being used  several times in this article. They talk about how it has always been widely believed that the best milk for human babies is human milk. However, somehow this has been debated.

Various perspectives on drinking milk - Deepa Verma

I'm going to introduce Deepa Verma who is the founder of Synergistiq Integrative Health.  She is against the idea of drinking cow's milk for health. I got the article from- Verma, D. (2016, August 22). The Fallacy of ‘Milk Does the Body Good' . Synergistiq Integrative Health. https://www.synergistiqhealth.com/fallacy-milk-body-good/#:~:text=That's%20supposed%20to%20be%20beneficial,strength%20created%20the%20milk%20myth. We seem to be the only species of mammals that drink milk after infancy, and definitely the only species that drinks another species’ milk. Cow’s milk is NOT designed for human consumption. Cow’s milk contains on average about three times the amount of protein than human milk does, which creates metabolic disturbances in humans that have detrimental bone health consequences, according to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.   How is this possible when a glass of milk is touted to have 300 mg of calcium? That’s supposed to be benefic

Various perspectives on drinking milk - Matthew Solan

Today, I'm going to introduce an executive editor of the Harvard Men's Health Watch.  I got this article from- Solan, M. (2019, January 25). Dairy: Health food or health risk? Harvard Health Publishing. https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/dairy-health-food-or-health-risk-2019012515849.   He supports the idea that milk is good for your body. I’m Matthew Solan, and I am the executive editor of the Harvard Men’s Health Watch. I previously served as executive editor for ULCA Health’s Healthy Years and as a contributor to Duke Medicine’s Health News and Weill Cornell Medical College’s Woman Nutrition Connection and Woman’s Health Advisor.   When I was a growing teenager, I drank as much milk as possible. I’d seen the TV ads - milk and other dairy foods were the express ticket to stronger bones and bigger muscles.   But today dairy’s nutritional reputation is as clear as, well, a glass of milk.   Dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese, are good sources of calci
